Because birth stays with us

Birth is one of those extraordinary experiences that can somehow be everything at once — powerful, overwhelming, ecstatic, frightening, beautiful, messy, intense and filled with love.

Maybe that’s why, even after giving birth seven times, I still haven’t quite got over the wonder of it.

I’m Delia, the founder of Leyda Tova. I’m a mother of seven, a birth-pool designer, and someone who has spent many years learning, listening and thinking about what women really need during pregnancy and birth.

I’ve experienced almost every kind of birth myself, and over the years I’ve had the privilege of supporting women, midwives and hospitals as they create birth environments that offer women more comfort, more freedom and more choice.

But none of this began as a business plan.

It began because I wanted to give birth in water.

How it all began

When I made aliyah, I arrived in Israel six months pregnant and planning a home water birth.

There was just one problem: I couldn’t find a proper birth pool.

A kiddie pool was available, but it felt rather more like giving birth in a puddle — and it certainly wasn’t what I was looking for.

So I started searching abroad and discovered Birth Pool in a Box, a professional pool designed specifically for labour and birth.

Naturally, I bought four.

What began with me renting those pools to other “water mamas” gradually became something much bigger.

I wanted women in Israel to have access to water birth not only at home, but in hospital too.

In 2017, I brought internationally renowned water-birth expert Dianne Garland to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Jerusalem to train midwives from across the city. Over the following years, water birth slowly began finding its place in Israeli labour wards, supported in part by the professional birth pools I supplied.

By 2020, Sheba Hospital had installed a state-of-the-art plumbed-in Active Birth Pool. In 2022, I supplied Beilinson Hospital with birthing ropes, stools and other equipment designed to support active and physiological birth.

Barbara Harper, global expert in water birth education, began to visit regularly and teach in hospitals all over the country. I sold pools and accessories to every birthing unit I could.

And Leyda Tova continued to grow.

From supplying birth pools to designing them

Working so closely with women taught me something important: the best products aren’t simply invented. They evolve by listening.

Eventually, I designed my first professional birth pool, the Easypool — comfortable, deep, affordable and designed specifically for a single birth.

Nearly 1,000 women went on to labour and give birth in it, at home and in hospitals across Israel.

And then women started asking me

If it's used only once what happens to all that PVC afterwards?

good question...

So I went back to the drawing board.

Meet the Evia Pool

The Evia Pool grew out of everything I had learned — from my own births, from years of supplying professional birth pools, and most importantly, from listening to the women actually using them.

It was designed to make water birth simpler, safer and more accessible, without ignoring what happens to the pool when the birth is over.

A completely new pool for every family.
No previous users.
No liner to fit.
No pool to clean, disinfect, pack up or return.

And a specially developed eco-PVC designed to biodegrade after disposal rather than simply remaining in landfill indefinitely.

For me, Evia represents something I believe very deeply:

We shouldn’t have to choose between caring for women and caring for the world their babies are being born into.

But birth is about far more than equipment

Over the years, my work has increasingly led me beyond the physical side of birth.

Because a good birth isn’t simply about which pool you use, which position you labour in, or which equipment happens to be in the room.

It is about the woman in the middle of it all.

Her body.
Her mind.
Her emotions.
Her relationships.
Her sense of safety.
Her voice.
Her beliefs.
Her hopes for this birth and for the person she is becoming.

Pregnancy and birth can open us to extraordinary depths and heights. There is something about bringing a new human being into the world that can reach places within us that ordinary life rarely touches.

And I believe maternity care should make room for all of that.

That idea is becoming the next chapter of my work: a way of thinking about birth that cares for the whole woman, not simply the process happening to her body.
